I tried to pass it with

> CFLAGS="-g" CPPFLAGS="-g" ./configure

but it did not help.

As a kluggy workaround, I tried

CFLAGS="-UCURLDEBUG -UDEBUGBUILD" ./configure --enable-debug

and it seemed to help but I am still waiting a better approach if you have
in mind.
