I run the tests and found out that I was really misunderstanding the
API (not that I started to understand it better since that!)

The problem was that the "select" timeout was greater than the
connection timeout, AND I didn't ever call curl_multi_perform again
after "select" timed out. Oh, nevermind.

After fixing it I started to get connection timeouts all right. And
some very occasional crashes as well, which I'd describe separately.
