Here is a second attempt, which I think addresses each of the issues that you
raised. Any further comments or suggestions?

It _could_ extract it from the RFC5322 headers, but I think I now understand
the design approach and why it wouldn't. I guess what I was a little surprised
about is that libcurl appears to just sit there. No errors, it just hangs.
