Thanks a lot for your input on these topics, Paul. I think this is enough for
us to simply cut out the sections of the code that is conditional for the
non-GPL version. They won't make anyone happier and the code will become much
nicer.

Great! Having the version number in bug reports etc is very helpful. I think
you should consider a run-time function for the info as well.
