Thanks. I looked at the debian/* files and it looks like, in the
previous packaging, a custom libtool patch which I removed, but the
build was setting the LDFLAGS.

It is a debian bug. I have removed it now and am preparing packages
for upload. Sorry for troubling the list. :-(
