Good, we're in agreement on all three points. I actually submitted a
patch a few days ago in a different thread (unfortunately, the original
post had expired from my newsreader and I couldn't figure out how to get
it back). The subject line of the patch is "patch for [out] parameters".
I believe it has just what you suggested.
