I have found this exact same issue with the workaround here

I can confirm (well, my example posted before can confirm) this still
happens on version 7.18.2. Am I very outdated ? If someone could try with
trunk it would be really appreciated.

If you are going to try it, what we expect on the output is: "curl told us
19".
