If I set the default gateway with the command:

    add default gw 192.168.0.1

I am able to reach the server and the sample app works.

are you sure you can reach the host from the set-top box? Do you have a ping

or any other tool to verify if you can reach the host?
I found some set-top boxes have issues with default gateway ...
If you have no other tools on the box perhaps you can try your sample
against
a host in your local subnet, f.e. the Fedora http server ...
