You didn't mention what libcurl version you use.

Is that really the whole program? If so, I'm quite certain you see a problem
in your system libraries, like glibc or similar, and not in libcurl since that
simple applications are used all over the globe all the time without these
problems.

You said it crashes "sometimes", can you elaborate on that?
