When I run configure with an LDAP library present (and no ldap option given)
it halts with:

checking for library containing ldap_init... no
configure: error: Cannot find LDAP library!

... which isn't very nice! ;-O Code-wise, (apart from the previously mentioned
prototype remark) I think lib/ldap.c gets improved a lot by this.
