For the record, I used a 2GHz AMD Athlon XP2800 but I only had 1GB of RAM as
well which really is what limited me (I wanted to avoid any use of swap during
my tests), since I only had traffic going on one out of all the 10K
connections! And I had X and Firefox as well as other memory-hungry
applications running while playing this this, so I did in no way try to
optimize number of connections.

And I used a simple web server (from curl's test suite) on localhost to
connect to.
