Yes you are right, when I run it on my Linux box it builds fine, but on
a Virtual machine I have to make that modification otherwise I get a
segmentation fault...

patch -p0 < libssh2_patch.txt
That is all that is needed to apply the patch. Since you are building
from CVS just follow the instructions in CVS-INFO

Should build without modifications after running ./configure . At
least it does for me.
