If you did you probably use the standard :
(./buildconf)
./configure xxx
./make
make install

no ?

If it is the case you may have forgotten to enable ssl on the configure line
with --enable-ssl
When the configure finished you have a (clever!) box that summaries your
options. You should see if you have ssl or not. Check that in priority
before the make.
