The configure.ac patch was not correct: it checked a variable for "yes" that
never is set anywhere. I modified it before I committed it, I'd be happy iof
you could verify it works correctly on msys/mingw!

(The other changes are not committed yet as I await the outcome of Gisle's
objections.)
