I don't think when one is sitting in front of Mozilla or IE one would expect
it to take a week to pull up www.yahoo.com. Likewise, if one is doing an
automated http get one would not expect it take a week (of course this
varies depending on the application). One can not rely on the server to be
smart enough to figure out that its connection process is deadlocked, so
this kind of safeguard should be built in on the client side.

Yes it is, and I would have thought not a very useful one given the problems
it presents. After looking into your first suggestion, it seems that the
combination of CURLOPT_LOW_SPEED_LIMIT = 0 and CURLOPT_LOW_SPEED_TIME =
"timeout value" is exactly what I was looking for. My suggestion is that you
turn CURLOPT_TIMEOUT into a shortcut to this combo, or call it
CURLOPT_INACTIVE_TIMEOUT.
