I spoke too quickly. Here's a snip of the output of testcurl.sh on
Panther:

buildconf: autoconf version 2.57 (ok)
buildconf: autoheader version 2.57 (ok)
buildconf: automake version 1.6.3 found.
             You need automake version 1.7 or newer installed.
             If you have a sufficient automake installed, but it
             is not named 'automake', then try setting the
             AUTOMAKE environment variable.
testcurl: buildconf was NOT successful

I suppose that a recent automake might be installed somehow, but I'd
much rather not... What is it that requires automake 1.7?
