Daniel, I think there were some questions but no refutation. Sorry I can't
code it for you myself - I'm buried elsewhere right now! And the project
doesn't use curl (yet).

So, did you come to any conclusions regarding the suggested approach? Would
it be a working way to get a timeoutable name resolve call?
