The problem is due to me having used 'automake-1.6' to do some automake stuff
and thus some magic files then refers to that tool instead of plain
'automake' in the distributed files.

This will be fixed in the next release, and in the meantime I think you can
work around this by adding a symbolic link or a script or something, named
automake-1.6 that runs the regular automake.
