It is supposed to work with a proxy, but doesn't. Or at least didn't when I
tried. Other software, incl. open source ones, supports proxies just fine.
Why can't curl?

I guess I need to test the newest version at work against our proxies.
Keep the bug closed for now. I had some email with upstream after I filed
it, maybe it does work now. On the margin, and as a maintainer, I am for
closing of old bugs.
