looks like my problem was due to a file that is opened, but is not closesd
somewhere in my application.
closing this file correctly seems to have sold the problem.

Another question : what does the error "couldn't resolve host 'xxxxxx'"
mean ? does it mean the server didn't answer ?

Have you checked the server-side logs etc to see what the server thinks of
the same situations?

At least that rules out that it is a multi-thread related problem. Which is

It would be good if you tried that, it could possibly rule out curl
completely and prove this to be a purely SSL-related problem.
