curl and signals

Hello,
When I call the curl_easy_perform to do a HTTP post and when the HTTP server
is not available,
my application catches a signal emitted by curl_easy_perform after the
CURLOPT_TIMEOUT .
What is this signal ?
Is it a manner to avoid curl_easy_perform throwing this signal ?
