Thank you for all your help. If anyone else comes across a similar
problem, I stumbled upon a solution (at least for me). Randomly trying
things, I added a second curl_exec($ch) and the first one still failed,
but the second worked!

Any ideas on why that would be?

libcurl version 7.10.2 is very old and we've fixed numerous bugs since, some
which might be the reason why you get this.
