PHP Apache cURL https woes. Another datapoint?

I have what I hope will be a useful datapoint on the PHP/Apache/Curl https
saga.

It may not be relevant to all instances of the problem, but maybe will help a
few people out and give some idea of why the problem appears somewhat
sporadically

I have an installation of Curl 7.8.1, Openssl 0.9.6a, Apache 1.3.20,
mod_ssl 2.8.4, php 4.0.6 all running on Solaris.

When I start apache with apachectl startssl the cURL functions work
targeting https urls.

When I start apache with apachectl start the cURL functions return this
error (errno: 27 message:SSL: Couldn't create a context!) when targeting https
urls.

Starting Apache in SSL mode or not seems to effect whether or not PHP can use
cURL functions on https urls.

Perhaps that might help at least some of the people experiencing this
problem work round it or get it solved.

I've added this info to
http://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=12211
