I've been trying to solve the same problem, the error code I'm getting is
Error 27: SSL: couldn't create a context!

I'm running on a win box with PHP 4.0.6

It works fine from the command line.

And the verbose output is totally quiet too? What about error codes from the
functions you call?

What if you try the exact same operation using the curl tool from a command
line, does that work?
