Right sorry, I didn't mean to imply that it wasn't possible. We even used to
do that in the past before the site went all HTTPS. It is just that in a quest
to minimize the number of steps to take for each release, I remove unnecessary
things and I consider that to be one.

Instead, I would encourage people to consider using alternative download
mirrors for the moments when the official site has problems or just to share
the load on more players:
