Interesting suggestion -- I'll give that a try. Thanks! What I've found
really puzzling is how inconsistent the problem appears to be.

btw -- I upgraded curl manually by compiling from source. Problem
persists, so it doesn't seem as simple as 'your curl might been too old'.
