I tried your suggestion but still got that annoying ASN1 error:

[user@server]$ curl -v --tlsv1 --ftp-ssl -uUSER:PASS ftp://ftps.xxxx.se:21

I get the samething if I try using: --sslv3, and if I use --sslv2 I got
"Unknown SSL protocol error in connection"
