I now tried :

victor_at_victor-desktop:~$ curl -O
http://picayune.uclick.com/comics/crrub/2009/crrub090[100-200].gif

and it is now doing exactly what I want curl for. It is perfect for
this sort of thing where the gif is the only the only object on the
page. I could get a greecemonkey script to do what you were describing
earlier but curl does what I want perfectly.

And now another question: What is "stdout"? I realize it is a unix
thing but nothing else.

BTW Rubes is a really funny comic.
