(note that TLS and SSL are just protocols/technologies, the correct terms for
the software packages are GnuTLS and OpenSSL, both of them handle SSL and
TLS...)

I can't but agree. I guess you'd need to contact the GnuTLS camp to figure
this out. To me it smells like a bug lurking somewhere...
