I am able to access the remote site using a regular sftp session without any problems; and using the same credentials that I use for cURL.
sftp -F old user_at_10.20.30.40
Connecting to 10.20.30.40...
SSH Server supporting SFTP and SCP
Authenticated with partial success.
SFTPMonitor_at_10.20.30.40 password:
sftp> ls
SFTPMonitor
test
test_me

Are you sure the remote server has sftp configured? Can you access the site
using a different sftp client?
