can't use a client cert with curl

Can someone give us some help ?
Whe are trying to connect over an https connection to a web server.
This server requires us to authneticate with a client cert.
We have received a certificates in order to do this.
when i try to connect with "curl --cert path_to_cert.cert https://someurl.com/xxx" i get the following error:
"curl: (58) unable to set private key file: 'path_to_cert.crt' type PEM"
