You're the first person I've ever seen asking for this and curl has been out
for a while...

Anyway, I could possibly be persuaded to accept a patch for the curl tool that
adds such an option if you can explain to me/us why it makes sense. Bits would
only be (bytes * 8) and I don't see why that is such an "Extremely popular"
formula.
