Ok, I decided to do it this way:

I added a --trace-time option that adds a time stamp to all the current trace
outputs (--trace, --trace-ascii and -v/--verbose).

Seemed like the least impact on current behavior and yet brings the feature to
all future users that want it.

Now I'll go back to that problem I was doing this for...
