The "devs" are probably using MSVC? The generic one downloaded from the
curl web site is built using mingw32.

I tried the generic one downloaded and can also confirm the behavior.
curl -v -k ftps://wcnet.org/ for example.

I then downloaded sources for openssl and curl and built, both
statically linked and not, and both debug build and release build (for
openssl, curl was built static in both cases); it doesn't bomb in any of
those cases. I'm using VC++ 6.
