What causes this extra character? Can I download differently so that I don't get it or will I need to strip it off after I have the file?

Most *NIX variants include a utility for converting dos files to
standard unix files. You could run the utility on the file after you
grab it:

curl <URL/file.html> ; dos2unix file.html
