Ok, I made some changes and committed, and I can no longer repeat the problem
in my end. But I don't have any live proxy nearby that requires
authentication so I haven't been able to verify your exact error case.

If this still doesn't work for you, please use --trace-ascii to produce a more
detailed trace dump for me to analyze.
