CURLE_FAILED_INIT (2) error?

I have piece of code that has been working well for 2 years (on redhat,
various releases). I tested it (unmodified) on Gentoo with glibc-2.3.2,
gcc-3.3.2 and curl-7.11.0.
The curl_easy_perform() fails with CURLE_FAILED_INIT result code.
All init functions are OK.
Last time I run this code on gentoo it was with curl-7.9.x, and it went
well.
kernel is 2.6.4, single CPU.
Any ideas?
