Wouldn't the judicious use of a QUOTE command or two likely take care
of the problem?

Stephen: How do you use this FTP proxy within the command-line FTP.exe
(in other words, not through curl)? If you can spell out the steps, we
may be able to help with a QUOTE (-Q) command that accomplishes what
you need...
