In the mean time, I've produced a fix for the configure script that attempts
to detect the information Redhat 8.1/9 users need to build curl with OpenSSL
(by using pkg-config), so if there's any such users reading this then please
get a recent curl package and build curl with ssl, but replace the configure
script with this one:

  http://curl.haxx.se/beta/configure-1.2

If I've done things right, it should just work.
