Can you see what curl's configure script said about the presens of a
"openssl/engine.h" header file?

Or even, run this command in the curl build root:

$ grep OPENSSL config.h

On my Linux box it outputs something like this:

/* #undef OPENSSL_ENABLED */
#define HAVE_OPENSSL_CRYPTO_H 1
/* #undef HAVE_OPENSSL_ENGINE_H */
#define HAVE_OPENSSL_ERR_H 1
#define HAVE_OPENSSL_PEM_H 1
#define HAVE_OPENSSL_RSA_H 1
#define HAVE_OPENSSL_SSL_H 1
#define HAVE_OPENSSL_X509_H 1

Does your output differ?
