errors installing curl

i am currrently having errors trying to install curl with ssl
this is the error message i get
checking where to look for SSL... /usr/local/ssl
checking for CRYPTO_lock in -lcrypto... (cached) no
configure: error: OpenSSL libs and/or directories were not found where
specified!
[root_at_afslx1 curl-7.7.3]#
i have openssl installed in /usr/local/ssl
but it looks like configure cannt find it
what should i do
